Mel Choyce Interview

Mel ChoyceMel Choyce is a Design Engineer at Automattic. She loves big type, cold brew coffee, and printmaking. Mel is speaking on Beautiful Web Type at WordCamp Minneapolis.

What got you into working with WordPress?

I was working as a contract designer and front-end developer, and the agency I was working for started doing a lot of projects on WordPress. I pretty quickly fell in love.

What do you like best about WordPress?

How easy everything is to learn. I feel like I picked up site building pretty quickly, and now if I need to, I can make a pretty robust site in just an hour or two. As a designer, that’s incredibly empowering! The nice UI also helps. 😉

What WordPress project has been your favorite?

I had the opportunity to work on the very early versions of the new WordPress.com site interface. It was super challenging, but it’s come a long way and I’m really proud of where we’ve brought it.

What’s your WordPress design preference?
○ Starter Theme   ○ Free Theme   ○ Premium Theme   ○ Framework   ○ Other

Starter Theme, _s 4 life ✌️

What would we not guess about you outside of WordCamp?

I DJ’d a pretty sweet radio show in college. I did two semesters of electronic music, and one really fun semester of video game music. (If I had to pick one genre to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be video game music.)

What do you like about WordCamps?

The community! It’s great getting together with everyone I talk with online and getting to hang out in person.

About skarjune

Skarjune was a former contributor on the Make WordPress.org Marketing team, WordPress.org,Training Team, and WordCamp Minneapolis—St.Paul organizing team. Skarjune resigned as Contributor in 2019 after disagreeing one-to-one with both Matt Mullenweg and Joost de Valk over their takeover of the Communications Team without consulting team members. Some members left in addition to the former Leader cast aside, and work by the Communications and Training team was discarded by new leaders . Hopefully, new real Governance will replace Automattic at WordPress.og, which is not WordPress.com. Commercial Corporations should respect Open Source GPL.
